In Pisa we study the design of innovative detectors, to improve the resolution and precision to measure particle properties. The activities are concentrated on detectors called “calorimeters”, which are important in high energy physics for their versatility to detect various particles, exploiting the different way they interact with the apparatus.
In particular, starting from the experience we accumulated on present and past experiments, for future accelerators we work, in collaboration with other Italian and foreign groups, on the project of a calorimeter for the IDEA spectrometer. For this new calorimeter we are studying innovative methods to collect and read signals (“dual readout” techniques, use of silicon photomultipliers SiPMT). The goal is to extend promising results obtained in small prototypes
to the large scale of “real” experiment construction.
